Microscope depth of field

I tried to fake the new Leica a60 system with its depth of field by adjusting the aperture in the ocular lens with some copper washers. Obviously this is not where the constricted aperture is because all I got was a coppery artaifact in my field of view. Anybody with the a60, can you see the differences in the lens apertures when you look through the eyepieces? Or perhaps from the bottom?

maybe Tira Mitchell will see your post. from what i understand, the A60's lens system is a fairly radical departure from the typical stereoscope, which is one of the reasons there's not a trinocular option.

Thanks.. she has been kind enough to talk to me about the system before.. said she thought it was in the guts.. which would make sense, with the kens arranged such that it does not impinge the field of view... this was my ill conceived attempt to hack my scope

Just throw together a DIY focusable micro-mirror array and you're good to go!

The fusion optics from Leica is based on 2 different sets of glass/lenses. Scopes are usually set up to either 1) have small, very defined depth of field AND have excellent focus or 2) have a larger depth of field, but the focus isn't quite as crisp. Leica took one set (think eye side) from each type of scope and built both into the new Leica's with the fusion optics. It's your brain that knits the 2 images together and lets you see clearly for the entire range.

My right eye is dominant - most of what I see if from the right eye, but I do go some depth of field from the left eye. Do you think that the Leica fusion optics would work for me?

Of all the scopes I have sold I have only received 1 back due to the person having such a different prescription on his eyes that the scope didn't work for him. If you have a question about this give me a call and we can work it out so that if the scope doesn't work for you I can take the scope back - in a timely way. I do this with people who have concerns/questions, but as I said, only 1 has ever come back and the person did have an extremely different set of complex eye issues.

Can you get an A60 set up for right or left eye dominance, whichever side works best for fine focus vs. depth of field? Maybe some people would prefer the optics better one way or the other?

Maybe you can spin the head right around and mount it “backwards” for that?

Unfortunately, you can't decide which eye tube is which. Leica has the right eye tube as the shorter depth of field/tighter focus eye and the left eye tube is the more in focus eye. The head does rock almost 180 degrees and I do have some people using it almost completely horizontal and looking through the eye cups in an "upsidedown" way. For their application it works great!
