I COULD SURELY DO A MACHINE ENGRAVING ON THE METAL. NOT SURE ABOUT GREATING A JIG OR HOLDING FIXTURE TO orient the part to do the actuall work. i'd need a couple more fotos to determine the feasibility of such a job. i would also want to know the desired depth of the engraving.
a technique i've toyed with several times-- dra your design. then texture just the background. when satisfied with the background, go ahead and cut the design. working this way, you'll never damage your cuts.

go with a much shorter heel. the heel drags on the edge, causing the roughness. you should try a heel that's very short. maybe a half milimeter or so, i cant tell from the foto, but you may also be going too deep into the metal. not sure why it's a problem with copper and not in silver. i assume...

corel has a bit of a learning curve. it will do most anything an engraver would have need of. it would be quite worth the price to get one of the aftermarket "bibles" covering the version you get. such may be available on the bay. if a newer version, most book stores could order one for you.
welcome to the forum. slow down a bit. spend a bit of time here, you'll learn a lot. the greatest tool in your shop is the pencil. this simple tool should be the foundation of all you do in the future. good luck to you and your efforts.
