    Bank note portrait graver.

Yes. some of the cuts look like they may have been done with a square graver. I really admired Bob Swartley's work. I have done some etching and have seen some very fine examples but so far I am not convinced the t the banknote stuff is etched. I think it is cut. I have as many or more...

    Birthday Pie for Ron Smith.

Ron smith is an easy guy to love. I love his philosophy on life. in my opinion his Winchester was the best piece of engraving I have ever seen. I told him so and he replied "you think so?" What a master this guy was. Not a conceited bone in his body. After he cut off his thumb he still did some...

    Printing Transfers Question

I use Tom white's film and Pictorio both. I think tom's works better than Pictorio, I use a HP ink jet printer and real HP ink. It transfers beautifully.

    Bolino Portrait technique questios

I am trying to hone my skills at portrait engraving. One of the best at this outside of the currency engravers is Phil Coggan. Im sure Sam and Lee Griffith are also some of the best. I have heard Phil coggan state that he does not sand back at all. I can't say that about the others. I...

    Yard Crew

I think they come here to be safe from the cougars and wolves outside of town. We ran the 4x4s about 200 miles the day before and only saw 1 buck. Next morning this guy was in the yard. the day after the season. Truth is there are about Three or four bucks that come in the yard a couple times...

    Background relief question

I do this in steel by pushing the metal up in the corner with a 90° graver that has a 20° heel and a 35 ° or 40° face angle. This will cut most of the metal out but leaves some pushed up in the corner above the desired surface. Then I just flush it off with a flat and sand it down with fine wet...
