Note from a 6 year old - HUMOR

When I saw this, I thought I'd split my sides laughing! This is too good not to share :)

    Japanese Inlay Technique.

Looks like he's using a straight liner stamp sharpened, and hardened, coming in angled and from varying directions to create undercut teeth over the work area. The steel has got to be very soft to allow it to be burnished down in that manner after the gold has been applied. Even so, I imagine...

    FEGA 2020 are you going?

I've never seen a banjo wielding Mariachi, Sam. Totally worth the trip!

    Silversmiths of Dublin 1980

The 'cold water cement' looks just like the hard dopping wax used for cutting cabochons. Tough stuff. It's applied hot, and becomes very hard when it cools. Might work.... might just make a mess, too.

    Silversmiths of Dublin 1980

Really interesting! The plaster mold technique is old, old school. I remember reading about it in Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography, but I'd never actually seen it done. Watching the designer lay down the drawing with perfect symmetrical lines directly on paper and on the metal is really...

    Procreate on l pad class

Hi Ed. Best to check with Sam Alfano. You can also call the GRS Training Center to see whether or not they'll be offering the class again this year. To get started with Procreate initially I spent a day with the following video tutorial, which is very informative, and has a drawing exercise...

    stainless steel money-clip solutions

Mostly, like everyone else, we're just looking for the most efficient way to get to a good end product that someone will vote for with their wallet.

    stainless steel money-clip solutions

Thinking out loud here, you may want to try steel rivets to affix the copper, brass or whatever other soft metal you're choosing to use, and once set, engrave the steel rivet heads to integrate into the design. As currently assembled, over time, and with use and flexion, the dissimilar hardness/...

    Adobe illustrator

You might want to look at Affinity Designer for iPad, Ed. Adobe keeps promising Creative Suite apps for iPad, but they never seem to materialize. Affinity seems to have a lot of the same functionality, and for $20 (one time purchase, not a monthly fee like Adobe) it might be worth a shot.

    rhodium?

Sam Alfano's method (sort of). Rustoleum flat black enamel thinned with a bit of lighter fluid. To apply, I put on a pair of latex exam gloves, use a forefinger to apply to the work piece, and wipe away the excess with my thumb. The gloves are just to keep the enamel from staining my fingers.

More on laser copy transfers to metal

For my Brother laser printer output, I use O'Reilly Auto Parts brake/parts cleaner on a several times folded clean paper towel, allowing the brake cleaner to absorb into the towel a bit before I swipe in one direction longitudinally along the part. The other item I use is 8.5" X 11" Avin Cross...

    globe shot

Dang! Tough crowd here!!! The Snake looks good to me, but I do wish the shot was clearer. Metals are always tough to shoot, because they literally reflect everything around them. Back in the day (1970's and 80's), I had to build my own light boxes out of picture frame parts with layers of...

    STUCK PIN

Personally, I'm a fan of John's vise grip approach. I like Doctorslava's approach as well. Given my aversion to paying someone else to do anything I think I can easily do myself, the next thing I'd try is carefully spot welding the top end of that pin to the upper cross bearing of my 20 ton...

    Practice Plate

Sooo... if its a practice plate, will you be posting it for others to shade and compare? It's great for experienced engravers (not me, I'm just an old silversmith with no more experience than you have) to critique the work, but I wonder how more experienced expert engravers would shade the...
