Hi Gwen,
I created the floor plate design on a 12.9" iPad Pro using an Apple Pencil and Procreate as an assignment for Sam Alfano's "iPad Design and Engraving" class at GRS.
Like you, I have an extensive background in computer graphics and design, and had been working with my iPad with...
Don't want to hijack the thread. That is a truly amazing work of art. Uncannily photorealistic from a distance with real 3D presence.
Thanks for posting, Mitch.
What Sam said. There are several Basic Metal Engraving courses available for sign up at 8:00 AM Central, on Dec. 3rd at GRS. https://grstc.com/schedule
IMO Mike, as an aspiring engraver, Basic Metal Engraving at GRS is the course you absolutely want to take right up front. It's a full week of...
I have to wonder how many times he stapled a finger working out that technique.
Should probably add here, that I ended up with a very long staple in my thigh once working at a pre-fab door company in Arizona (Ouch!).
Hard to know exactly where to start without knowing if the ring is already fully formed or in a yet to be formed 'flat' state (a photo is always helpful).
Rather than dividing each segment by a certain number of millimeters, try this. Working from the outside edge of the ring, with an extra...
Yes it is! Sam handed out photo printouts of the bronze lighter scroll design to our October 2109 iPad design class at GRS. I keep the image on my bench for reference because practically every nuance of what Sam does in terms of shading, gradiation, line spacing, zone shading treatment is...
I'd leave your laptop at home, and go right out and buy the best iPad, or iPad Pro you can afford along with an Apple Pencil, and then download Procreate from the App Store. There are plenty of tutorials online to get you up to speed on the iPad with Procreate.
The other thing I'd suggest is...
Would think that in this case, carefully working with a small mirror finished burnisher, directly across and diagonally across the scratch, changing directions often would be they only way to 'erase' or minimize the scratch without affecting surrounding engraving.
As others have pointed out...
Thanks, John.
I was actually a bit shocked at how well the drawing came out. I had gotten to a point with my work where I was feeling completely plateaued.
No longer though. Really pleased with the class, and excited to apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills.
A quick shoutout and big ”Thank You!” to Sam, and my classmates at Sam’s most recent IPad Design class. The instruction was top notch, the crew was great, we had a lot of fun, and every day felt like a breakthrough.
Was recently experimenting with a CNC machine, which was VERY disappointing, but on one of the forums I was researching, I came across something that machinists do which I tried and worked quite well. Basically they cover the bottom of the work piece with painters tape, and cover the mounting...
If nickel is tarnishing, the metal is reacting to a reagent present on the metal (probably acid, but could also be base). This can happen when an oxidizer has been used to blacken background without neutralizing. I'm guessing your nickel piece either has an active reagent oxidizing the piece...
First time post on this forum. I’m a long time bench silversmith/goldsmith jewelry designer specializing in higher end hand fabricated precious metal jewelry, and I watch trends fairly closely.
There are a lot of factors putting pressure on domestic jewelry production, not the least of which is...
