    Engraving Hammer Styles

That is just like the one Joe gave me. Joe is a very nice guy and a fine sculptor as well. Several of his bronzes are standing in Michigan.

Factory Engraved Winchester Model 12 - John Kusmit

Not John Kusmit or his brother, Nick. The scroll looks nothing like their work. Also if John had engraved it it would be signed J.K. Looks more like the work of someone in Ken Hurst's shop to me.

Firearms Engraving in 19th century America by R.L. Wilson

Santos, German engravers of the 19th century all used similar source material both in their training and practice. Young, Nimschke, Helfricht, Bodenstein, et al. were all originally from the same region of Germany (Thuringia). Over the years, I have seen almost identical animals and game scenes...

    Engraving Hammer Styles

Cowpolp, You have not said whether you are cutting in the Asian method or the European or side hand method. Did you take your class from John Shippers? He uses the Asian Style (cutting toward yourself with a short chisel and short handled hammer). Most of the comments above are for the European...

    Announcement: New, Know Nothing

That GTX was a steal! I cut templates into Plexiglas with a push graver. Problem is if you are not skilled at hand engraving you have to learn that first. Monk is a past master of making panto templates so take his advise.

    P&V Eagle Design

Dan, Do you have a P&V? I don't think I have seen one get to the US without engraving. Most were engraved by the late Claudio Tomasoni.

    Question: Inscribed Model 1886 Winchester

As far as the layout goes, I would just draw out the first one then make a smoke, ink or wax transfer for the succeeding 49. Mitch, Here is a link to the whole story. https://www.rockislandauction.com/riac-blog/the-battle-of-denver-city-hall

I agree. Facebook groups are a poor substitute for this site. Just try to research something that was posted a year ago on Facebook.

    Question: Inscribed Model 1886 Winchester

At first look in the auction catalog, I thought it was cut with a pantograph. That idea was blown out of the water when I saw the Winchester factory letter indicating the gun was made and engraved in 1894 along with 49 other guns for Arapahoe County. When I was able to blow up the image I could...

    Question: Inscribed Model 1886 Winchester

I have cut through the cyanide color hardening found on Italian replicas by Uberti and Pietta. I just have to start each cut at a slightly higher angle to get under the surface but never on real bone/charcoal CCH. Even on the cyanide colors, I'm using air power with carbide or M42 gravers. I...

    Question: Inscribed Model 1886 Winchester

Here is a question for my most experienced engraving colleagues. Rock Island Auctions is currently offering a Model 1886 Winchester rifle (made in 1894) with a color case hardened frame that is inscribed "Arapahoe County" on the left side of the frame. The inscription is clearly cut through the...
