    Question: Tricks for flare cutting?

Would it be OK to wet the graver with some oil for flare cutting? My high speed steel gravers cut considerably faster with oil. Using a turntable, do you normally grab the vise or the turntable when turning it? Best regards, Ralf

    Question: turntable

Hi, I made myself a turntable two years ago, starting with a 9“ thrust bearing used for rotating parts of furniture and heavy TV sets. It works, but... Made from Aluminum with steel ball bearings, the precision of the bearing is not comparable with thrust bearings for machines or vehicules...

    Brother where art thou?

I‘m using a Brother B/W Laser / Scanner since 2006 and could confirm that direct transfer from paper to metal with acetone sometimes works, most of the time doesn‘t. I‘ve tried other solvents to no avail. For practice plates and low detail pictures I print on „Backpapier“, a brown stiff paper...

    Diamond paste/powder

I tried hand lapping on copper, soft iron and brass. Always used 0.5 micron diamond paste. Brass works best for me, actually a piece of lead free „Ecobrass“. I spread a little of the paste on the plate and rub it in with a piece of hardened steel. A copper disc I made for the flexible shaft...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

Just tried Sinterklas‘ suggestion. Works well for straight lines. Used on curves, it uncoverered the additional problem that cutting left bends seems more natural to me than right bends. Starting the left bend‘s backhand cut in the „Wrong“ direction makes it look as bad as a right bend...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

I totally agree with the idea. I was just trying to follow Sam‘s video. There‘s something we Germans call „die reine Lehre“, meaning you follow the instructions by the letter and do not mess around or skip steps in case the student is ignorant of the importance of a certain step. I‘ll go...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

After cutting a lot of straight and curved line practise, I still have difficulties to get the graver roll symmetrical for forehand and backhand cut. This is what I tried already: -grinding two facets on top of the graver, with the same angle as the V shape, to have an indicator for the roll...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

Hi Sam, Thanks again for making the download version available so fast! I just purchased and downloaded the video. Where's the link to the practise patterns hiding? I did not hear or see anything about it in the first three chapters, and at the end of chapter 3 the design should be already...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

I‘d also be happy to buy it for the purple player. I live in France, letters and parcels take meanwhile 2-3 weeks inside Europe, oversea shipment will not be faster. The „instant access“ feature would be a big advantage in the present situation. Stay home and stay healthy... Ralf

Turntable use ... i dont get it :(

As an afterthought to my former post, I made another magnetic label that bears a 2D dot pattern with about 0.3mm spacing. It’s printed with a b/w laser printer on white paper. Works better because of the enhanced contrast and finer structure. Place it on your work piece or on the ball vise...

Turntable use ... i dont get it :(

To circumvent the centering issues, I glued a 2x2cm piece of technical drawing paper (bears a 1mm blue grid) onto a printable magnetic label (less than a mm thick, prints in inkjets). This I place on top of the engraver ball’s jaws, center the vise on the turntable (no precision needed) and look...
