Thanks. Also might have been a bit deep on that soft brass. Here is the latest on returning to my practice steel receiver. Despite reviewing graver sharpening, doing it by hand and getting angles right challenging. Thanks for putting up with beginner.
Got this little black powder derringer at the past weekends Gun show. So it has become my 1st finished H&C project. All brass so cuts very easy. Still much to learn about design and execution.
Appreciate that tip. I know I’m doing a lot of winging it with the scroll work. More planning is needed but at this point trying to master the tools and learn what works to make a cut I want. Double edged sword, probably developing design habits that will be hard to unlearn.
I do know about the need for a FFL if doing engraving guns for others. My “practice” receivers will never be for sale. Pretty much scrap when I am done with them. Mainly a way to learn to cut appropriate steel. Copper is like cutting butter, brass can be harder to get a nice cut on than steel.
Thanks. Started on the left side and decided did not care for the dot background so stopped doing that. By the time got to the right side tool and hammer control had improved a bit.
Thanks shows you how little I know thought the box was a compressor. Separate lot has the gravers among other tools. There is a GRS hone which has been bid up a bit. Nice big GRS ball vice to. Will see how it goes. Thanks for the info really appreciate it.
Took your advice and made a handle for H&C local wielding shop gifted me 18” of 3/8” key stock. Played with it a bit. Will take some to develop the touch needed.
I have found an estate auction with this machine. As usual the auctioneer has a rather poor picture and no description. Looks to have the compressor and three hand pieces, a palm style and two pen looking. I know little about these. Can anyone give me some guidance? This is online auction so no...
Thanks. I had found the spiffy handle sold by Lindsay and had gone all fancy in my mind. If I used the handle from a vacuum cleaner would it the be a power graver? Asking for a friend. Lol thanks for all your advice
Thanks. Looks like I should get a small metal lathe that always wanted. Would be a simple thing to turn a handle, drill and tap for a set screw to hold the graver in. Have a fellow that has offered me a good price on a combination lathe and milling machine. Down side is it’s 400 lbs + (and I...
Do you make your hammer and chisel gravers? Not found a ready source for suitable gravers. Played with H & C in a small way yesterday. Have some die makers chisels but those a huge and not for fine work. Cut a scroll on a axe head, I can see possibilities with the right tools.
I spend a lot of time studying engraved guns from 1850’s-1900. True, generally not the highly refined details seen in modern engraving but I would be delighted to be able to come close to that old work. Would like to whine about using hand push gravers rather than power air gravers but know...
