Advice on points for fine lines

I want to clarify this isn’t done yet. The banner and rope on the bottom of the anchor is awaiting finishing until I’ve improved my finer line skills. Just looking for advice on graver point choices for such work

Advice on points for fine lines

It’s been a while since I’ve posted mostly due to an inability to practice. I am attaching an image of a practice plate I working on. It is the Marine Corps Eagle Globe & Anchor. The image was lightly etched on the plate and engraved thus far using a Lindsay Palm control with a universal...

    Cast iron engraving HELP

I wonder if the part was originally color case hardened? The colors may have faded out but the thin high carbon layer is still present. Dr Gaddy wrote an article regarding his study of case hardened double guns and he reccomended annealing to retouch engraving/polishing and of course re-cch...

I’ve had good luck with a Canon 3500 series inkjet I have found that some of the older recommended printers aren’t compatible with newer operating systems

Critique Request Drawing critique. Learning fur

We have a Hobby Lobby not too far away from us, they have a large selection of art/drawing supplies Ill check there. I have a question, Im not off base by thinking that drawing, specifically realism and animals will help with my engraving designs? I know you do quite alot of both. Im not in a...

    Corrosion Basics for Gunsmiths

So for longer term corrosion prevention I use fluid film. It is lanolin based and truthful any lanolin based product would perform the same. Rig is good also. Old school was bear grease or sperm oil but it’s Blaise to speak of those so the poor sheep will need to bear the burden. I guess losing...

Thanks, for both the compliment and pointers. She is a Daddy's girl. I was struggling in that area, her fur is more blended colorwise than I captured. By good pencils? Im using a .5mm mechanical, is there something else you reccomend?

So. I’ve done some study and practiced and made a best effort attempt at drawing the base of my GSD’s ear. I figure that the fur in this area has many different directions, textures and colors so it would be a good focal point to practice. I know this is more enlarged and detailed than...

I agree, The 9mm is TOO fast for its dia, at times passing through with little terminal effect on the target.

I believe maybe as recent as late 70s early 80s. They switched from the M16A1 to the A2 early 80s. By the time I attended basic it was all A2s. I quess the DOD leadership decided it was wise to provide basic qualification on the system someone would be using.

On another note. I posted earlier this month regarding a source of unfinished 1911 slide casting for less than 20 bucks. I will run and link here: https://www.sarcoinc.com/parts-kits/pistol-parts-accessories/1911/45-castings/ They cut nicely. V/R Dale

That means you served prior to 1983. Many arguements are made regarding the adoption of the M9 over the 1911. I can see merit in both camps, but the fact that the SO community held on to it lends some credit to the caliber at a minimum. I wasnt trying to single you out as you have provided...

No problem. Ive been building 1911s for about 12 years. Having trained under Bob Marvel, he would beat into my head the various terms. Now, I have just begun studying engraving seriously, and balance was beat into my head by my first instructor Jessie Houser. I certainly wasnt trying to...

As an example of what I was refering to in looking front heavy. The picture I am attaching is of my most recent project I am building. The engraving was done by another, it is not my work. But you will notice the negative space to the front of the slide flat nicely balances the negative space...

As far as the design. I am a rank amatuer at best, but I would say that it seems front heavy. With nothing behind the cocking serrations and so much ahead it SEEMS out of balance to me... For what its worth. V/R Dale
