Question: Advice on developing an eye for determining the overall flow of a design

Many Many Thanks! Your statement of look for what not to do makes perfect sense to me, it is hard to understand what is good if you dont know what "bad" looks like. I had been hesitant to invest in DVDs but it sounds more and more like a good idea, especially now that I recognize the names of...

Question: Advice on developing an eye for determining the overall flow of a design

One thing I am struggling with grasping is the concept of the visual flow of a design. What are the characteristics of a design which "lead the eye" so to speak? Are there exercises in drawing which assist with developing this skill? Is it a skill which can be developed? Is it one of those...

First, I do greatly appreciate the input. I was reading your post and listening to the message and while I wholly understand your point, my neighbors think Im crazy as it is so if I did this I would end up in a rubber room for sure...... Not to make too light of the suggestion, I also thought...

I started a sketch book and have been practicing since December and you are correct, the change even in that short period of time is compeling I will check out the Ken Hunt's Youtube videos as well. Understood. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I tend to lean forward in the sturrips so to speak and do sometimes get ahead of myself.. I have recently begun just focusing on the spirals. It does seem to be the most challenging part of the artwork portion of this.

Thanks mtlctr, I had alot off inconsistant depth on the tale feathers but managed to pull off the long tail line somewhat consistant in width. Do you have the book on caligraphy by Dover? If not its worth looking into, that was the source for the bird and it contains MANY drawings which would...

Practice Slides for those who maybe at that stage.

seems to cut rather nicely. It can see how being cast would raise some concern, but this appears to be a good practice medium.

I am not, but SARCO, Inc. has pistol slide castings which are out of spec for what ever reason for sale. They typically have the sides ground and make EXCELLENT practice fodder. I use them to practice site cuts and port lowering before attempting on a customers pistol. I feel these would make...

Thanks for the help. I have been accumulating literature on scroll design. Starting with Meeks and numerous others. JJ Roberts just shared some others with me last week and I continue to seek out what I can.
