    Laser toner transfer discovery

While we're being helpful this morning, here's another transfer tip: For some applications, it's better to use a "negative" for a transfer. In other words, a solid black background with white lines. You can engrave the lines without destroying the pattern or making a mess of flaking toner...

    Question: Andu Engraver

"3. Lets get back to the BS about the seize and destroy.. Suitcases full of products. Yeah, didn't happen." I'm pretty sure "Goldjockey" was just describing his own experience dealing with infringers in a completely different business and industry...

Show us your favourite chasing hammer

i must be the only engraver on the planet with just one chasing hammer, but it is a Friedrich Dick with the coveted, long out of production, 7/8" face. i made the replacement handle and would not recommend using beech for that. it's been re-wedged about six times...

    Nitrite Problems with gold

Shouldn't 'pure' gold, be 24k, .999, or whatever, regardless of its source? otherwise it's something other than 'pure'? As for sterling, I've engraved a ton of it and it's all been pretty agreeable, but last year I put a monogram on an old, 1920s?, Tiffany Art Deco cigarette case and it cut...

    Nitrite Problems with gold

I engraved a knife with an 18k rose gold frame and it was some of the most execrable [feces] to cut that I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. The chip would crumble out in tiny crystalline chunks under the microscope. Thankfully it was virtually 100% platinum inlaid so I could shave the...

Interesting hand punched design on bronze box.

Yes, Guido, this is exactly the sort of thing we love to see here in the Cafe! Thanks for posting it. That's a very interesting piece, but I'm afraid I don't know much about it.

    What is this.

yeah, i've seen those, and the "first gen gravermax" would be about the same era, 30-35 yrs or so ago. a square graver will fit in the end, then it's held with a set screw. assuming it's clean and in good condition it should work fine. fire it up and let us know how it goes..

    What is this.

looks like an older GRS model, pre-QC inserts. can you post a couple shots of the business end, end on? does that black part come out or is it fixedly attached?

Just finished my first pup portrait.

A bold hard line can be just the thing in some situations. On this pistol I used it to create a 'stained glass' effect for a religious theme. It might work well on a memorial article like your dog portrait.

Just finished my first pup portrait.

wow, very nice! i'd suggest more contrast in your scroll background, but otherwise that's outstanding, especially the dog. try a heavier outline around the background spaces, then with a very short heeled graver dive deeper into the parallel lines. it's surprising what a nice clean...

    Warming a Graver Vise

Take it to bed with you- like putting your boots in the bottom of your sleeping bag when you're hunting. Or maybe try a heat lamp. Even a 100w incandescent up close for 30-60 minutes before you start working should do the trick.

Question: What Drawing Skills Are Needed for Engraving?

"a scroll, for example, should exist in your head in 3 dimensions, and when you draw what you are seeing in your head, it will follow into the drawing in 2 dimensions. " learning to 'think' in 3D is similar to becoming fully fluent in another language, when you're no longer translating back and...
