I ordered a couple of these pens for my students who wanted to do some eggshell sculpting.
Anybody know.?
Is this company legit???
Haven't heard a word back from them!
A piece of Styrofoam and a small attaché case from the Goodwill will work.
Oil the gravers and stick the onto the Styrofoam.
Glue the foam down inside the case with Duct tape.
Yes, true, that will work if you are just making one graver.
I use the wet wood with holes method because I usually make up a batch of 5-10 gravers at a time.
Like to have spares sharp and ready to go if I get a point break in the middle of an engraving day.
I agree with Monk and use the same solder from Micro Mark.
The heat never travels anywhere near the tip of the graver.
So no chance of softening the graver.
If you are worried, drill graver size blind holes, 1/2" deep into a piece of soft wood 1x2"
Soak the 1x2" in water and set your gravers...
Beautiful piece of engraving work.
Fine, strong scrolls with wonderful design and shading..
And a great job on the background and photographs.
One to be proud of.
You are doing fine and have wonderful detirmination to improve.
Just keep studying good scroll designs and drawing for your project.
It takes a lot of courage to do this and to ask for critique.
I admire your efforts and know you will succeed.
Thank you, now I see what you are engraving.
And you are correct, the pheasant IS NOT upside down.
But as Monk says, the scrollwork need some serious revision.
Lets see another and better drawing please.
Looks like you have some pretty nice metal work on that receiver.
And it deserves a nice...
I don't want to sound negative.
But what are we looking at, please?
Is this a design for a knife blade or is it a sheath for a knife?
If it is either the pheasant is upside down.
Allan. Thank you for your reply.
Didn't have any luck finding the small tap/barb fitting at my Home Depot.
Think I got mine at a well stocked Ace Hardware.
If not you can rig one out of a female T. fitting, some short threaded nipples and a thread to barb fitting.
Allan, no need for a mess when draining the tank.
Just buy and install a tap fitting with a hose barb.
Attach a plastic hose to the barb, using a small clamp.
Drill a tight fitting hole in the cap of a quart size plastic milk bottle and fit the hose into it.
Also drill a 1/16 hole in the bottle...
I advise first putting your general location on your Cafe bio.
There may be an engraver in your area that has these tools and would let you try them before you invest a lot of money in the wrong thing.
I have had the privilege of teaching over 600 beginning engravers.
And started them all out...
As Sam W. says.
An Optivisor gives you more freedom of head movement and pencil space than any microscope.
Or even 3.5 diopter drugstore reading glasses will work.
And you can buy them at the Dollar ( now $1.35) store.
Sharp pencil, draw lightly, erase, make corrections then firm up lines.

Hello Roger.
I think that we can add that the National Rifle Association and several colleges combined to teach engraving, mostly gun and knife, in the 1970's.
That got the instruction ball rolling and introduced a lot of new talent to the industry
As you know, Neil Hartliep, his wife and their...
