Mathew, please rethink this design before cutting. You have some interesting elements but two bud leaf elements in the first and last scroll that do not originate from the backbone and are just floating in space. That is unless I'm misreading your design.

Announcement: It isn’t much but my first commissioned piece

Well done Byrn. Don't be afraid to do the project over from scratch, for more practice. When you get one that you think is better see if you can swap it out with the guy. Then keep the original as a treasure and your first commission. I haven't seen the original artwork but it seems like there...

    Shortening gravers

You can cut with a diamond disc if it is carbide. Or cut it with an abrasive wheel if it is a high speed or tool steel blank.

    Question: 1-Step versus 2-Step Re-sharpening Process

Allen, a little over thinking IMO. Who cares about a slight shortening of the graver length and it's life?? Gravers are readily available, not too costly, and like pencils and other tools, designed to be used up. To correct a dull or broken graver just go with the flow. Sharpen the face and then...

    Who engraved this?

As Sam says, an old technique and often used before computers and printers. I was taught to do it in junior art classes by using fade out graph paper in two different square sizes. Just follow the number of squares where the original art touches the squares you lay over it. Trace if you want...

Looking For Advice on buying gravers for push engraving

Glensteel is a brand of graver sold by GRS Corp. in Kansas. Colbalt can be any brand of graver that is made from M-2 steel. And most brands of gravers are available in High speed steel. Most all regular brands of good U.S. steel gravers, if sharp will cut your copper plates using push, hammer...

    Design work

A smoke pull is usually made by coating the object in the soot from a smoky candle or oil lamp. (A couple of added drops of motor oil will make a candle smoke.) Then the smoke image is usually picked up on wide, clear tape ,such as shipping tape. The tape can be applied to white paper or...

Looking For Advice on buying gravers for push engraving

If you change to a carbide graver you will need diamond laps/stones to sharpen. And carbide will not necessarily cut your metal easier than will any other sharp graver. Carbide will cut harder/tougher metal however. You don't need carbide for copper plate engraving. A good high speed steel...

    New forum member!

Hello Thomas, and welcome to the the Cafe forum and the world of hand engraving. Your early cuts show a lot of promise and pretty good graver control. I would advise you to study scroll design, get some books and/or videos. Pay attention to the scroll construction and proper shading. You are...

    Printer

Be sure to get test copies from several printers before you buy one. I have a Canon MF227dw Laser and like it. Don't know if they still make this model.

    Drawing on the work

I'm with Monk, Magic Marker is hard to beat. Quick to apply and dry, easy to touchup. Use a broad tip for large areas and a narrow point, in the same brand and color for touching up mistakes. Easy to cut through and easy to remove with a swipe if acetone. I mostly use the blue marker but also...

New member seeking critiquing or advise.

Byrn, Welcome to the Cafe forum and your engraving journey. Again, it would be a help to you if you posted your general location in your bio. An engraver in your area might invite you for a visit and get you going on the right track. James B, Meek's book, The Art of Engraving would be a good study.
