Have an old GMT Master I've owned since it was new in '78. Still runs (more or less) but needs a new stem and complete servicing. Any recommendations for reasonably priced Rolex mechanical work from the experts here on the forum?
Have contacted Procreate regarding the need for native scale and grid functions. They basically told me to “run along”, lol.
My workaround is either to import the finished high res bitmap into a program like Coreldraw or Photoshop which have good scale functions, or to simply use the % scale...
Just a thought, but if I were looking for a ready made less expensive solution, I’d look into a small motorized pottery wheel with plenty of torque. Variable speed and reversibility would be a plus, but bottom line stability, and torque would be key. A quick search turned up these candidates...
Correct! For gold to silver, try #56 silver solder on clean surfaces and use plenty of borax based flux (I prefer “Handy Flux” from Rio Grande). Heat smoothly and gradually until the solder flows, and as soon as you have a good joint remove heat, as overheating will cause exactly the same...
My late brother James (Jim) used to cast with Argentium from Rio Grande. As you probably know castings are inherently more brittle than pieces fabricated from milled stock, so some brittleness is to be expected no matter what you are having cast. That being said, Jim's experience with Argentium...
Great suggestionTom! Thought about doing this with a GRS dual angle fixture. Love the idea of a fixture I can just pop a bur into for quick shaping and sharpening!
Correct regarding material removal. Most of the hogging out can be done with 1mm and 0.5mm burs. These are for precise removal of material from very tiny areas where gravers, and larger burs won't work.
Great resources, and advice! Thank you, Jim!!
Thank you for the generous offer Leland. Adder DM’d me with a solution for modifying my existing burs, and it works perfectly for me. Problem solved, and big thanks to all!
Thank you Allan. Those would be perfect if they came with a 1/16” shank, but sadly they’re 3/32”. If you come across that size in a 1/16 shank please let me know. Have checked some dental supply sites, but they want a medical license to order, and going back to school for one just seems like a...
Need a source for micro fine FG burrs (1/16 shank) less than .5mm for very fine precious metals sculpting and background removal. For use with a GRS Ultra 850 rotary handpiece. Please respond here or DM.
Thank you!
Doesn’t look as if the laser cut scroll had any effect on the value. If anything, the gun complete with optic sold at well under the market price for an unembellished Beretta Model 87. Hard to say, but it’s possible the poorly done embellishment was a net negative...
Thank you for clarifying. Plating is problematic with rings for two reasons. 1. Rings wear at an accelerated rate compared to virtually anything else, and plating is the first thing to go in terms of wear. Plating on something that gets a lot of wear is just asking for problems if the buyer has...
Ditto on Argentium. The fewer steps to get to the finished product the better, and dealing with plating is a PITA. What are you planning to use to create your matte or satin finish?
Expanding on the brazing idea, if this is a purely decorative piece, cutting a channel for the inlay, laying in the gold and using a strong easy flowing low temp solder like Tix which flows at around 280 Fahrenheit to permanently affix the 9 Carat gold into the channel might work. This would...
