    Japanese porcelain 3d scrollwork

The label on the museum wall had this description, but I suspect something might have gotten quite lost in the translation of her statement from Japanese to English: "As she has done here, Aoki Katsuyo usually works with bone-white porcelain to create an intricate jumble of labyrinthine...

    Japanese porcelain 3d scrollwork

I visited the Art Institute of Chicago today, where I saw this wonderful large 3 dimensional scrollwork porcelain sculpture. Maybe 20" tall? The artist is Aoki Katsuyo, born 1972. I found more of her work on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/katsuyo_aoki/

Gorgeous scroll inlaid 19th c. percussion pistols.

The auction closed and someone got these for £3,000 GBP ($3,836.00 U.S.) plus approx. 25% auction house premium. Assuming the documentation is correct, and the condition we see is honest, I think that's about right for these. (although I really dislike how auction houses take a premium from...

Gorgeous scroll inlaid 19th c. percussion pistols.

Currently up on an auction site, that link may disappear over time, but here is a photo. A pair of 19th century percussion pocket pistols by J. Beattie, London, screw off octagonal barrels signed to top, dolphin shaped hammers above foliate scroll panels, folding triggers, the grips inlaid with...

You've heard of snake guns, well, here's a lizard gun.

All I know is it was on the Facebook page of Kosarev Antiques. I also checked their linkedin and Instagram but wasn't able to figure out where they are located. BTW their instagram has quite a number of other stunning items. https://www.instagram.com/kosarevantiques/

It will be more accurate after you mill it for two red dots.

    Scroll

Marble is stone. :D Looks like Statuario Venato d'Oro to me. I would have preferred the lower flower to be more evenly spaced between the lower and upper scrolls, but that's just me.

    Recent work- angel and wreath

While I pop in to check things out every few months, I haven't been in here much the past few years. But I'm still trying to keep out of trouble, and still carving stone. Latest project, a gravestone in Indiana limestone. It's 4' wide, 2' high, and 1' deep, and the angel is carved with 3" of...

What’s the name for this pattern?

In architectural stonework, we call it a diaper pattern, but I've also heard it referred to as apron.

Example of how not to do it.

Not only did it sell, 9 different people bid on it. Sad.

    Sculpture

I'd guess 8 to 10 months of steady, stressful, often boring and mind numbing work requiring constant focus and attention. But finding a block of marble of the quality to support that detail, that blows my mind.

Example of how not to do it.

That is so sad. And what is worse, they all have lots of bids, so the guy will be encouraged to trash more good guns.

Example of how not to do it.

We get loads of examples of great engraving, showing how it should be done. But sometimes it's informative to see what to avoid, especially if it is all combined in one place. A real shame that they trashed a great gun; it wouldn't be so bad on a Hi Point or SCCY. Warning. NSFW, get the eye...

My thought is the graph paper background will also help if there is any lens distortion, you can make sure teh graph lines are still equally spaced and parallel when printing it.
