Italian marble sculpture- Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa, Italy

And a few examples of the work to be found at Staglieno. The kind of work many of you do in metal, but in three dimensions in marble.

Italian marble sculpture- Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa, Italy

Just an update, a reminder for those of you who've seen out posts on FB and Instagram and our website, and and invite to those who haven't caught them yet. These are two of the sculpture restorations we've been able to sponsor at Genoa, Italy's monumental Staglieno Cemetery. It holds thousands...

Looking good, I really like how the shading and perspective work together.

    Carving a picnic basket

Traditional hat for carvers. We need to wear a hat to keep the dust off our hair, these are the most comfortable of any. They're most prevalent in Italy, partly because in warm or hot weather they let your head stay cool (heat doesn't build up like it does inside a cloth hat) and they don't cost...

    Carving a picnic basket

I thought a few of you might enjoy this. I'm finishing up a large limestone trees tump tombstone with a lot of personal details; elements that tell of the couple's lives together. I just posted a timelapse video on youtube, carving the rattan picnic basket.

    Carving stylized foliage in limestone

It's a variation on stiff leaf. The actual individual leaves are closest to Byzantine or very early Gothic, but the flow is much more freehand and loose, Byzantine is much more precisely defined.

    Carving stylized foliage in limestone

OK, finished this side, now I've flipped the stone around to carve a little foliage on the back side.

    Carving stylized foliage in limestone

Brinno TLC200Pro. Very nice, although the menu is simplistic and awkward, takes a little while to get the hang of the settings. However, once you get that it's really easy to use. It's used a lot on construction sites, where they set it up and leave it for months on end, keeps going with 4- AA...

    Carving stylized foliage in limestone

Carving limestone with a small hand held pneumatic hammer and an assortment of chisels. I think it's pretty similar to what you guys do in metal, but perhaps I'm being a bit looser and less precise, just going with the flow and going for the flow. Let me know what you think. Most of the...

    Genovese scroll work

I just spent some more time in Genoa, doing further research on the Staglieno cemetery. (some of you are familiar with the book I wrote last year on that magnificent place). I spent a day walking around town photographing the architectural ornament, and took these photos of scrollwork and...
