Basrelief on a Ti ring using the Chris DeCamillis tools

This isn’t oak leaf, but after looking at Chris DeCamillis beautiful oak leaf on a golden watch dial, I had to give it a try.

Especially because I have the same tools. :biggrin:

It isn’t really deep relief, something over here we call “bas-reliefâ€￾

Paolo, the thickness of this ring is 2.35 mm. It isn't one I forged, just one I bought that was made on a lathe.
I prefer 1.5 mm on Ti rings, so I could use my lathe to make it bigger size and at the same time making it less thick.
It is just a prototype, perhaps some like this thickness, we'll see.

Have you ever tried making a seamless titanium ring from what we call a "washer"? (Basically a disc with a hole in the center)

I have often wondered if the metal was ductile enough to form in this way - and how many times you would have to anneal it to get it into a ring form...?

I understand what you mean Brian, no I never tried that out of Ti. But I"m sure it can be done.
What I did do is making 0.2mm round wire out of 1.5mm titanium sheet using a carbide draw plate. I needed to anneal every 0.05mm using my Kerr oven.

Nice job yet again Arnaud. Do you smooth the sculpting with stones or is that finish straight from the punches? Also as you work a lot with titanium how do you anneal it. Is it like gold that you heat then quench? Thanks for posting and I hope you have a nice weekend.

Phil, thank you for the compliment, no smoothing using stones, just the finish from the punch. I just after that used a piece of leather with diamond powder to polish the upper surface of the punched structure to obtain more visual depth.
In fact this job didn't take much longer than if I had done the shading.

Great work Arnaud, once again, I have made a TI ring the washer way 1.5mm , no annealing and came out alright, but I have the same question as Phil, how do you anneal the TI,

Sorry Richard, I forgot to answer that one about annealing ti.
I just heat the metal red using a flame / torch and then cool it in water. The temperature isn't that important as I experienced, only when overheating it becomes hard as glass and it will break, there is no way to reverse this.

The advantage of the enset is that you can be made, stitch by stitch that seems very pleasant to use.I have already thought about a 2 euro piece, but what is the material on the outside? take a one euro coin, it's half the price.... ( we are dutchies you know... )
It' very easy to press out the middle piece and it works very easy, on YouTube you can find a lot of information about the way to make rings like these.

Is Cupro-nickel the same metal of thr american 5 cents

Caty, using another power assist system probably will do this kind of moving metal as well. However it was Chris attention when building the EnSet to be able to go at slow speed using enough power to do this kind of work.
If you never tried the EnSet before and you are interested, I invite you in my studio to give it a try when you are in my neighborhood.
