Book review: THE CHURCHILL-EATON COLT .45

A few days ago I received a copy of Winston Churchill's new book THE CHURCHILL-EATON COLT .45. This is one book that all engravers will want for their libraries.

Engraved for patron Hugh Eaton of New Hampshire, the Colt .45 featured in this book might be Winston's finest work to date. Numerous raised gold figures, flush borders, and a variety of scroll and sculpted arabesque treatments place this gun in a league of its own. Only a master of design like Churchill could combine all these elements into such a breathtaking, graceful and harmonious composition.

The Churchill-Eaton Colt took several years to complete, with Winston photographing and documenting much of the process. Not only are there numerous photos of the finished gun (both in the white and after bluing), but many photographic examples of the progressions of sculpting, inlay, and decoration, along with Winston's comments and explanations. Few people have had the opportunity to see Churchill work, and for the many fans of his engraving, this book not only provides brilliant photographs and technical details, but gets up close and personal with the man behind the tools.

The book is of the highest quality with gold gilded pages and finest quality binding and dust jacket. On Page 2 is a fabulous print of ruffed grouse reproduced from an engraving done on a 28ga shotgun. The print is signed by Winston, Huge Eaton, and author Charles Fergus, and is a spectacular example of Winston's wildlife engraving. It's difficult to resist the temptation to remove the print from the book and have it framed! The print alone is worth the price of admission.

There are numerous photographs of Winston's engravings throughout the book, which include guns, handmade knives, and jewelry. Suffice it to say that it's simply the greatest collection of Churchill engraving photos to date. It's also a great read, with forward by Hugh Eaton, introduction by R.L. Wilson, and WINSTON CHURCHILL - THE MAN AND HIS MASTERPIECE by Charles Fergus, which tells the story of a shy Vermont farm boy who becomes one of the greatest hand engravers the world has ever known.

This limited edition book book is destined to become one that engravers, artists, collectors, and firearms enthusiasts will treasure for years to come. Don't miss this opportunity.

Available now from GRS.

This is an investment grade book. There's no telling what the price will be after it's out of print. I'm not a book expert, but some books I own have doubled and tripled in price since I got them.

Hey, an idea. I fast 2 months and live off of the book and water... Hmm, yes, that might just work :)

But I think I have to talk my wife into fasting too, that's already harder...

Sam,
Thanks for the heads up. This is a great book. Stopped for lunch after picking it up and did not leave until I had read it all. The waitress thought I was nuts.

I had a hard time deciding whether to buy the book or pay on some pressing back accounts.....I bought the book. It arrived today and I didn't put it down all afternoon, reading it and studying all the great photographs. This will be one book I will treasure among all my engraving books, one that I'm sure will be out of the plastic bag over and over as I revisit the great commentary as well as the pictures. It will be willed to my grandson and hopefully he will enjoy it well after I'm gone.
