Some of you have asked about carving clad coins, they can be carved, but are not the ideal coin to carve, there is a fine line in carving them deep enough, but not into the copper..I,ve carved a few thur the years, the one in the photo is one i carved a few years ago..It,ll give you a ideal of what you can do on a state quarter..

As I sit here studying a Clad Quarter I am amazed at the depth control that would require.
Boy will I need a lot of practice?

What Bill has done is show his masterful control over tools and subject. A job like this takes great care and careful execution, because right below the nickel surface lurks a copper layer that's easily revealed with cutting that's too deep.

The detail is excellent as always, but one of the (many) things that sets Bill apart of the rest of us coin carvers is his flawless and beautiful finishes that create the illusion that the coin came from the Mint this way.
