Per customer request, I often use a "single point" background on scroll work.
Depending on the desired effect, it can either be left shiny and it will sparkle when turned in the light. Or it can be muted with Ferric Chloride to make for a dark but interesting background.
I use a 120 deg. graver, tilted slightly...start deep on one side and end the cut shallow at a designated point on the other side.
Simply make your cuts into a "fan" shape, and your done with the background.
BUT----it has to be done cleanly!
