I am big proponent of scroll design being drawn from the object being engraved. Scroll should look like as it literally grew on that piece. Sometimes that design is derived from the outline of the piece itself, sometimes the curves present in the metal, sometimes its the historical associations with a given shape, or the lines or shapes present within handle material. In this case, it was the star damascus pattern on the blade that dictated to me what should be put on the blank canvas of the bolster. You can judge whether or not I effectively met the "It grew there" criteria.
