Templates certainly have their place as does the trusty Dual Angle fixture. The Dual Angle can make nearly any graver you need and is not locked in to a specific geometry. I'm using my EasyGraver fixtures for the majority of my sharpening now (and they are fixed geometry fixtures) but I would never be without the versatility my Dual Angle fixture. I hope Stefano can find someone who can help him with this.

I think the best way is to have both systems...i'm planning to buy the templates but i will never sell my dual angle...probably templates are more accurate but i cannot have hundreds of them, in this the dual angle is unbetable.
You have also to consider that the engraving equipment outside USA is way more expensive due to conversion, taxes and tariff...i'm a beginner and tring to keep the cost low!;) so for the moment i'll try to fix my dual angle :hammer:

I love my templates, but a dual angle has its own uses.
I looked at my dual angle, and if it had play worth worrying about, a little peening top and bottom around the edges of the opening, would tighten it in seconds.

You have a drill press and want to do this as cheap as possible? Try looking at the thread I posted about making my own sharpening jig. This stuff isn't rocket science, engraving has been around for centuries. Only in the last 50 years has the tooling become so expensive, figure out how it was done without the modern conveniences. Save yourself a bundle of cash.

Part of your issue might actually be the drill press setup. Your lap and the table of the press might not be square. I know this is really splitting hairs here, but realistically it'd take an lot of play in the fixture to be way off.

I think you'd be better off shimming the post and fixture with various pieces of tin foil.
