thank you sam. as far as a foto repository on the forum, i think it's a good idea. just as is the historical fotos of engravers. if we show no interest in our own history and evolution, nobody else likely will.

Perhaps the best way is to start a historical/antique engraving tools thread, and stipulate that the photos must be uploaded and not hosted offsite. If hosted offsite they will disappear from our forum if/when the poster no longer has an account with the hosting company (Flickr, Photobucket, etc). Our Photo Gallery forum plugin software is no longer supported and is defunct, so I really hesitate to use something like that as there's no guarantee how long it'll continue to work and be compatible with vBulletin.

Everything on the Internet has the potential of going away, never to return. Heaven forbid... but, if you grabbed your chest and flopped over off your engraving stool I'd guess it wouldn't be long and everything here would become just a fond memory also. Perhaps nothing is permanent even with a brick and mortar museum. But, real equipment displayed in a real building might last longer although not as easily shared worldwide.

Yes it would, and there are stories of museum items being pilfered and/or not displayed. The stuff I acquired of Prudhomme's has been out of sight for 25 years. At least now it'll be photographed and shared with students and engraver friends that visit our house. The Norton Museum in Shreveport, LA (Prudhomme's home town) might be a good location for it as they have many guns he engraved. How many engravers go to Shreveport, LA though? Probably few to none.

Yes, I agree. This will be great having the virtual museum. :)

Individuals pass on, but organizations usually last as long as they are useful. What about FEGA's website for a photo museum? FEGA will be here as long as it is useful, which should be a lot longer than anyone of will live. I am too new to know of any other organizations, are there any other engraving based organizations?

As to the actual ownership, let that be the decision of each owner as too what will become of the items after they are gone. It is your responsibility to let your survivors know about the disposition of your collection. Maintaining a brick and mortar location to store them can be an expensive operation that unless there is major financial support will never last. It will be doomed before it is started. Politics will get involved as to the locations, the size, the people who run it, the "little empires" built within the museum will cause more problems than successes.

Would it be possible to have a "portable traveling display" of significant items, that could be a part of the FEGA display at the convention in Las Vegas? That might make an interesting draw for our craft.
