Recently my ever-indulgent wife got me a Lytro Lightfield Camera (http://www.lytro.com)
Some of you may remember seeing initial web postings about it in June of 2011 - it's the camera where you shoot now and focus later. They've gone from a table full of stuff demo to real products in less than two years.

This first version is pretty much just a snapshot camera but it already has very interesting potential for us.

First, for macro work the fact that you focus later means that it's much easier to get the shot right. Set the camera on a tripod using its little adapter and take the shot. After you import the picture pick just the right point of focus and export a .JPG version.

But even more interestingly, they've enabled a bit of Perspective Shift. You set it up in the Desktop software and then you can 'wobble' your view a bit.
The key thing about this is that while you're in this mode the entire picture is in focus.

I've been meaning to take some example shots but have been busy. This weekend at the Gem & Mineral show I used a display of gemstone trees to get the examples.

First, here's the full 'living picture':

Here's a slice with the focus at the near side:

Here's the same picture but with the focus point at the back:

But here's where it gets fun: enable Perspective Shift (which I did) and then click and hold to put the image into shift mode. Now do a Print Screen and crop to just the picture and you get one where the whole picture is in focus:

There are enough of us that like photography to mention it just for the fun, but this ability to have extreme DOF focus at will means it's usefull for everyone.

Or, not quite in focus. It still looks fuzzy to me.

I've been messing with my phone camera & using various applications for manipulating shots...they look ok but not very good on a pc screen.
Plus side is It's quick & easy to post in multiple places eg: instagram,Facebook, website in one hit without all the faffing about :)

Yeah, slightly off in the full depth because of the quick way I pulled it out of the screen print. If you go to the 'real' picture and click and hold you'll see the full effect.

That's a cool accessory. I learned the trick of using a magnifier in front of your cell camera at an Engrave-In. Obviously better with a better lens.

Technically not a macro, but in Creative Mode you can pull in for very close focus. Look at the main Lytro Gallery page and you'll see some great examples.

The extra magnifier in front of your camera is a fun trick I stumbled upon while trying to take some quick pics at the bench with bad lighting. I have one of those old Dazor round fluorescent lights with the big glass magnifying lenses. I shot through that from about 12 inches and was completely surprised at the results. I've also gotten good results with the phone and other random loupes and such.
Now maybe one day I'll stop all this nonsense and buy a decent camera!

The Lytro camera is interesting. I remember when they first came out. I'm still not sure I see a practical use for it, but it is intriguing.

Fred, you've got it right!

The fact that it has these very interesting macro capabilities is an extra that gives some of the folks here an excuse^h^h^h^h^h^h reason to buy one. ;)

Whats the resolution? When I looked at it a year ago I think it was only something like 640 x 480.

Just read the posts very interesting the new Samsung S 5 does something very similar I saw YouTube video showing how you can take a picture and then just tap on the screen to the area you want to be in focus. You should check it out

That's actually a bit of a tricky question because of the way the Lightfield stuff works. But for practical purposes the .jpg's you export from it are 1080x1080.

As Carlos mentioned there are some other cameras that are imitating the effect. What they're doing is simply taking a set of frames at different focus points and stacking them in one image so you can choose which one you want. For comparison to this first-gen Lightfield that's probably pretty close but for later generations the LF will pull away because you can, literally, focus at any point you want.

A couple of things that they let out of the bag after I first posted this is that the camera has built-in Wifi and they have an app that lets you control it. Unfortunately it's iPhone only at this time and they currently are deliberately ignoring the much larger Android market. But it's nice to know they built in more power than they initially advertised, instead of the usual talking up something that's nothing.
