Graver demagnetizing?

How do I demagnetize my graver point. I tried rubbing across a magnet and it made it worse. I tried a demagnetizer I got from ebay, that didn't work either. I ended up making a new one but it still bothers me that I don't know how to do it. It was my first graver blank that I sharpend in my beginer GRS class.

Don't know what kind you got from Ebay but I use one made for the tool and die industry. It has about a 4X6 area but al you need to to is put the graver down on the plate and draw it away slowly. I think they are around $40.00 or so on Ebay and if you do much engraving, they are well worth it. Nothing is more annoying than chips sticking to the point! Some people use the soldier guns with a "loop" front and pass the graver through there but I could never get a good job that way.

I use my weller soldering gun. Just pass the graver between the two leads going to the tip. I actually did my center puch this way a few days ago. It was so bad I could pick up a small screw with it. Now I gan lay it down in fine iron fileings and it picks up none.

I didn't have any luck trying the Weller soldering iron so I bought a tool grade demagnetizer from ENCO. It was on sale for around $32 + shipping. As Rex mentioned it has about a 4 x 6 inch table and works very well.

Must add, i had a big problem with this, i tried the Wiha de-magnetizer with no luck, i have just bought a 75watt Weller soldering gun with the loop, now this rocks and i don't have problems anymore.

Thanks for the tips from all the members, helped me out.

there's somethin else to be done, but wont really cure the disease; put a lump of plasticene or ductseal on your bench. touch the graver point to the lump . it will seize the chip. this will work till you find the demagnetizer of your dreams.

I took the center (armature) out of a small motor which leaves a hole of course. I put a switch on it and You stick the graver through the hole, turn on the switch and draw the blank out slowly. Do this about three times and you should be good to go. Any little motor that works will do. I think mine was an old weed eater motor or something like that. The bushings were gone and so I converted it into a now demagnitizer. A little more powerful motor will give you a little better result, but about any will do. That ought to tame the little beasties...........Ron S

I have always had very good luck with a fridgie magnet. If it doesn't work dragging it north to south pole try going east to west.

I've always had pretty good luck with the soldering iron, myself.
Ron's "hollowed out" motor sounds interesting.

One time, I accidentally dropped a badly magnetized graver and when I picked it up it was demagnetized.
An engineer friend told me that the impact possibly realigned the molecules and demagnetized it.

It's not a procedure I'd recommend......stick with the soldering iron or the demag tool.

Brian,
I was told that as well as rapping it sharply on the bench. It never worked for me but I guess in therory it is supposed to work.

I find that swearing, throwing gravers to the floor, and passing them over a demagetizer does the trick. The swearing and throwing gets the molecules' attention and the demagnetizer forces them back into line. Molecules can be unruly little beasts. You have to show 'em who's boss.

I thought you had to place the gravers North to South under a pyramid overnight and then speak nicely to them - Who knew if I yelled I would get better results.... ;)
