Was difficult especially towards the edges was when tips began breaking frequently
there may havve been a hardened wedge of steel forged into the cutting edge. that would pose problems depending on what graver you used

Seems like there certainly was. I used a Lindsay 96 and had recurring broken tips ...

You got further than me, trying to do a couple now but on the hammer end and sides… they are insanely hard, probably going to try annealing them since they will be wall hangers.
