Saw today an innovative workholding system for irregular 3D shapes. I put a coaxial connector in it just to demonstrate the principle. see picture.

All the pins are spring loaded, you put your workpiece in and thighten a bit. The pins will conform to the surface. And now, you can lock the pins in their position, and thighten the vise more. I was surprised how stable the fixture is.

that's a way cool tool. but it looks as tho the item is too far below the vise top to be useful to engravers

I think you could raise it…. I don’t think that demonstration is rigged for engraving. But probably it would have to be just over halfway so they don’t pop up.
