Does anyone have a suggestion for a good ivory substitute?

It depends on the purpose.
I come at it from the knifemaking perspective, so YMMV. I like ivory paper micarta if it's 1) going to be used 2) going to be sculpted or carved 3) not required to look exactly like ivory. The color is right, but it's very even and creamy, which is an advantage if that's what you want but a disadvantage if you really want it to look like ivory with simulated Schreger lines and stuff.
I like mammoth or fossil walrus ivory when I need to use actual ivory.
There are several synthetic imitation ivory products. Alternative Ivory is available from Masecraft. The Elfoyrn Super Tusk material from Maker Material Supply is also very nice (I think I like it a little better).
American Holly wood can be a nice substitute if you want a natural product and a nice color match, but it's wood and will behave as such.

Not sure on the size you need?
I have used A white billiard ball,the old ones were made from ivory.
The modern ones are made from a very hard Plastic ,called phenolic resin or polyester resin (not sure if they are classed as plastics.
It worked very well ,I made a new Hat for a Japanese ivory figure (circa 1880-1900) Meiji Period.

Looked great when finished. I used a metal hacksaw ,ball held in vice for first flat cut.

could this box be made in Argentina? I bought it at the Rastro Market in Madrid some years ago.
is the name on lid F. Jauregui ,an Argentininan Name?
Also engraved on corners on base ,Felipe Toiris (?) Febrere ,1928.
The box looks hand made in silver plate.
Also has small medallion of Napoleon on lid. E Seurre, L Q mark (interlaced)

No, unfortunately I cannot help you with this.
I do not know any artist with this name and also I do not know anything about collection's boxes.
By the way, we were talking about ivory substitutes!
If you have a personal interest not related with the original object of a thread, I would suggest you to start a new one, or, as you also did, send a PM instead of hijacking someone else thread.
Moreover, I would also suggest you to edit your post and delete all that box's pictures you populated this thread with.
I am sorry for the rant but I was shocked by seeing all that not related pictures.
