Rusting solution
7oz 3% hydogren peroxide
0.75 tsp salt
1 oz white vinegar

Blackening solutions
Tap Water
Tap Water + 1 tbsp baking soda

Procedure
Thoroughly cleaned with dish soap and water, acetone and isopropyl alcohol
Heated with blow drier, applied rusting solution, boiled to blacken.

I am interested in this process for use on iron mounted muzzleloading rifles. How many applications of the rusting solution did you use? Did you card off the rust between applications? Did you boil between applications or was it a one-shot deal?

I didn’t count, but probably between 4 and 6 rounds of the process was needed

after the first three, I started using a toothbrush to remove anything that wasn’t sticking well enough, the boiling being completed between each round, 10mins minimum 30min max.
Afterwards I heated gently with torch and applied the carnuba and then burnished
