Hi new guy from Kansas City, my name is Nick, I do pinstriping/painting on just about anything, bone pyrography and some etching and carving. Have been interested in engraving for some time now. Not exactly sure what I would want to get and cant get everything all at once, so I think I'm going to go for hammer and chisel, if I can just make up my mind what to get that is. I came across this forum and its got a lot of good information, Thanks for sharing everyone. Suggestions are much appreciated

Welcome to the Cafe, Nick. There's lots of info in the Tips Archive, and I made a short video demonstrating hammer & chisel work with minimal tools which is also there.

Welcome

Nick, I just wanted to say welcome also. I am a new guy too. I did just purchase a bit of equipment for a Christmas/retirement present to myself and am just now getting started. What really got me going was watching some of the brief videos from some of the members of the café here and others that are out on youtube.. I bought some videos on scrollwork and sharpening gravers that I found extremely useful for me anyways. Good Luck and hope you enjoy.

Well Nick, welcome. I am an old engraver who has had occasional thoughts of learning pinstriping but never really tried it. Maybe someday I will get to it to doll up my A-bone. You will find engraving a fascinating art form where craftsmanship is of major importance, same as pinstriping.

Hey Nick!

Cleared up my PM box so you can retry your message.

Here in KC we're in a great place - we've got the 'big' company - GRS just an hour or two to our South (depends on where you are in town. For me in the Northland it's 2 hours, if you're in the South it's just one). Steve Lindsay is just a 5 hour drive to our North in Kearny.

We'll have to find a time you can swing by my little spot in the garage - that way you can try everything but the NGraver and the Enset. Not that I've done more than play with H&C, and I only push occasional shading, but I've got the bits you can try.

i'm not one to discourage the making of tools. but, most modern gravers are made of fairly good steel. trying to make your own can be an exercise in frustration. far better to get the good stuff right off the bat.

Nick, as another beginner and a fellow pinstriper, welcome to a great place to learn about the world of engraving. I'm also gathering information and tools for h&c. I think Pinstriping and engraving have a lot in common. But a pinstriper can correct his mistakes a lot easier. Good luck on your progress.

Thanks monk, its definitely easier getting tools other than making your own...but while I'm waiting on a few things I might as well.
Belprime, thanks for the welcome and I agree how they are similar...probably what led us here. Good luck to you as well

i do make gravers out of used 3-corner files. check the post a few days ago on "chisel handles". a grs dual angle sharpener makes it rather easy to achieve varied geometries. the nice feature of the dual angler-- it can create just about any geometry wanted, from square, round, or in my case-- triangular files.

I cut only w/ h & C and sharpen by hand. Its fast & easy and cheap, er, inexpensive. for magnification I use an Opti-visor w/ a #7 lens plate. I like Belgian (steel) handles w/ set screws to hold the tool bit. i get them from a tool supply or GRS has an xcellent assortment in 3/32". For a hammer I have a small ball pein & a Good German chasing hammer.

bienvenido,

Most if not close to all questions have been asked and answered there are exceptions, make good use of the search button, if one search misses try rewording it, Start from the very first post and work yourself to the most resent, I've done it and it will take you awhile but worth the journey.
