I have shipped guns in the past by USPS and UPS. I had no problems as long as they were going out for repair or finishing. I have sent to Doug Turnbull for finish work and then returned to me. I have also sent to Ruger for repairs with no problems. Now no shipping unless it is from FFL to FFL. This means the dealer must run the shipping out as well as return, through their books, two entries. If you are not known to the dealer you may be charge for packing as well as the two transactions and need to fill out the federal form to get your own gun back. I don't know when this changed but I just found out when I wanted to ship a rifle for a donation to an organization to auction.

There is nothing new to that. You were essentially shipping the gun to a new owner it seems since it was for a donation not back to the original owner as you originally stated you have done in the past. The USPS is the easiest to ship back and forth with. Fedex and UPS seem to make up rules as they go along.
