I have shipped guns in the past by USPS and UPS. I had no problems as long as they were going out for repair or finishing. I have sent to Doug Turnbull for finish work and then returned to me. I have also sent to Ruger for repairs with no problems. Now no shipping unless it is from FFL to FFL. This means the dealer must run the shipping out as well as return, through their books, two entries. If you are not known to the dealer you may be charge for packing as well as the two transactions and need to fill out the federal form to get your own gun back. I don't know when this changed but I just found out when I wanted to ship a rifle for a donation to an organization to auction.

There is nothing new to that. You were essentially shipping the gun to a new owner it seems since it was for a donation not back to the original owner as you originally stated you have done in the past. The USPS is the easiest to ship back and forth with. Fedex and UPS seem to make up rules as they go along.

fortunately, i quit with the ffl thingy. i no longer trust myself to working on guns anymore, or even on hi end stuff. i just hand engrave stuff of my own creation--- buckles, pendants, brcelets and such. btw-- i still have much joy doing this. without fear of screwing up. if i botch a job,i toss it, cuss a bit and then do a good one. life is good.

You never mentioned if you have an FFL. If you don't, thats the problem in a nutshell in shipping a firearm to an individual other than for repair. Back and forth to Turbull is legal even as an individual as it is for gunsmithing or repair NOT sale since it is being shipped back to you as the gunowner

That rings some truth, The last time I tried to ship a gun, and it was for repair, through FEDEX, I was sternly told I cannot ship it from their office. I would have to ship it from my place of business for pickup even as a FFL holder. Now they did not refuse it but had their special way they would only accept it. This was the first and only time I tried to ship after moving to Pennsylvania. I did check their policy online and it was correct. That is the way they do it. Now I do not know if the same procedure would hold true with them as a non FFL holder to be honest.
So what did I do say you? I went straight to the us post office and shipped t priority mail. No problems and have done it multiple times since then. I have given up on UPS and FEDEX.

Now again remember, according to federal law, You cannot ship a gun to another individual thats for sale unless you have an FFL going to another FFL holder. even through the post office

Now I will say that the contracted places like mail box and ups stores will not accept guns as you must go to the distribution offices. Again that's a whole other story as stated before. But the official US Post office counters should. Did you talk to the post master or just the guy behind the counter? I have had no problems with them nor have many of my fellow engravers.
