Hello all
Here is my 10th attempt at a "Hobo Nickel"
I have been selling them and saved up enough money to buy this engravers vice
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260208080946&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016
when i got the vice the bearing was packed in GREASE and didnt spin but after a good cleaning and a little sewing machine oil it spins like a champ
I was very excited to get a 20 pounder for 140.00
the person had it listed with a buy it now price.
I will have to make the top plate with all of the holes in it but that will be no problem
please comment on the nickel
thanks
Dave

Nice job, Dave. I would suggest keeping the edge of the rim nice and sharp. That can really make a difference. I use a really wide flat graver that's been slighly radiused and cut right up to the rim. Recutting LIBERTY and the date can also sharpen it up a bit. / ~Sam

Sam,
Thank you
the graver you use for the edge.... is the radius just enough so the graver will not dig in?
or is the whole bottom of the edge cut to a radius.
thanks for the kind comments

John
Thank you
Dave

I still have pictures of a ear, eyes, etc. taped on my wall of my engraving shop from my earlier days of coin carving..This would be a good ideal for all new coin carvers to do..Also look at pictures of hair and beards on subjects and study the lines, location and flow..I can see your skill advance on each coin you carve..

Maybe a nice closeup of the radiused graver?

Or a line drawing (which would probably be clearer as a teaching tool).
