I don't know if it's high or not. It's definitely not high if something's going under it, of course, but it seems to me that the Mason's symbol is usually placed like that. Could be that it so often has something under it that it winds up looking odd if you center it even when there isn't something under it.
Or I could be halucinating again.

Use a tripod (or other support) and the self-timer - you'll be amazed at how much it sharpens up your pictures.
