For any of you who registered for this class and may still not have been notified:

The NRA sanctioned classes that I was contracted to teach again this year at Lassen College in Susanville, CA have been canceled. This was done with only two week advance notice, and the reason stated in a letter that some students received say that it was due to: "a scheduling conflict on the part of the instructorâ€￾. Suffice it to say – this is not true...

A few students who have been in direct contact with me (I was never given a complete list) have decided to take me up on my offer to teach the same Basic Hand Engraving class here at my studios.

I am doing it for half my normal private class fee - for several reasons. I feel that the students were treated badly - with only two weeks notice. Students will have higher expenses for lodging here in Stockton than they would have had staying in the College dorms. Both the students and myself had already reserved this time slot – so we might as well get some use out of it. Hopefully this way, a few will still be able to make good use of their vacation time...

This class was to have run for the two week time period starting July 9th and end July 20th. I will teach the exact same material that was to be covered at Lassen – but concentrated into a one week long workshop.

I have complete facilities for up to 12 students, and this one-time only offer is open to those students who were signed up for Lassen (they get first priority) as well as anyone else we can fit in at the last moment.

Cost will be $375, This will include printed notes, designs/transfers, practice plates, and 4 graver blanks. Optional projects, knives, keychains, moneyclips, etc. will be available for those who wish to purchase them.

Please call or email immediately if you are interested in reserving a space or need more details. We start at 8:00 am next Monday – July 16th.

Good luck with your relocated class.. It's a shame that some orgnizations don't have the courage and call it like it is rather than try to blame somebody else for their own shortcomings. I always felt honored that people were spending their hard earned money to take a class with me and schedule free time to do so. You are doing the honorable thing.

Thanks Marty,

The class was full at Lassen, but my place is almost 4 hours away, so only a handful of the "diehards" (serious students:)) are going to be able to come all the way down here... but I WILL take care of them as best I can.

You know what goes into the preparation for one of these - as much time or more time than it takes to actually teach one. Plus packing and hauling everything.

The only official document I've received was a copy of my contract - with "CANCELED" stamped in red... nothing more. Would have been nice to know at least 30 days in advance...

I start unpacking tomorrow.

A smiliar thing happened to me a few years ago. I was to teach a class at a college, blocked out the time on my calendar, made preparations to go, and then shortly before the class was to start they cancelled it.

Somewhat unrelated but I was once on the other end of a similar thing. Signed up for a class that sounded interesting, drove out to the college the first evening and... nothing.

Went to ask / complain the next day and was informed "Oh, we canceled that class because only one person signed up." I replied "It would have been nice had you told me it was canceled."

I graduated from Lassen Gunsmithing program about 22 years ago. From what I have heard things have really changed up there. I think it is great you are offering the class at that rate. To bad the college couldnt have given more notice. I know people travel great distances for those classes. Brian, do you know Marvin Dunn, I went to Lassen with him and believe he was from Stockton.

Hi James,

I spent abiut 5 summers at Lassen myself around 20-25 years ago... Mostly gunsmithing classes, but that was also where I met and took classes from John Barraclough, Sam Welch, and Eric Gold.

My reason for teaching there all these years later - was to kinda pay back these 3 guys for taking the time to be there to teach me!

Teaching there last year, showed me just how much these guys put into their classes. The preparation time as I said earlier, takes as long as the teaching... and then there's the hauling stuff back & forth.

The only Dunn I remember from back then was Billy Dunn - at the time he was a deputy sheriff in San Joaquin County. He lived in Stockton, retired to Lodi recently. We've became great friends over the years. Just spoke to him yesterday, as a matter of fact!
