Have you tried a cast iron lap and diamond powder? That's pretty hard to beat.

Sam,
I have the cast iron lap with the 1 micron spray from GRS. I have charged it as instructed and I don't get as good a result as with the PSA laps.
Yesterday I was sharpening c max gravers and trying to polish with the cast lap and it seemed like when I was starting to get it polished then more scratches would show up in the face. Also when the graver rides on the wheel it doesn't sound perfectly smooth if you know what I mean. Should I go through the charging process with the small carbide triangle again? Or possibly sand the wheel? Or does the diamond powder work better than the spray? I would like to learn the trick to it since everyone else's results seem far better than the way it has worked for me.

I use 1/2 micron diamond powder and it polishes C-max to a glassy polish. No more diamond spray for me, thanks to Arnaud for the diamond powder idea. With the powder I don't use the carbide when I charge the cast iron.

you may have to "give the lap a chance"== to become charged, that is. may take a bit of time for the diamond particles to imbed into the surface of the iron. until the diamond imbeds into the lap surface, it wont do its job properly

I tried to source those after Rio Grande stopped carrying them years ago and had no luck. The one place I found required that I buy it by the case which was in the thousands. I gave up on it after that plus it's way too fragile and doesn't last long.

I am going to try the diamond powder. I have the lap charging directions for the spray, what process do you use with the powder? Do you add mineral oil to it?

Sam,

Could you give us idea how to apply diamond powder on a cast iron lap (in details - step by step), please

Thank you in advance

Sorry to take so long to put in my two cents worth. As a former lapidary I am familiar with that world, as are others, lot of overlap especially when you are a brightcutter and into lettering. Inland Lapidary has em, good service. I got an 8000 3m disc as an intermediate grade to see, and it works great, will probably get a couple more grades to speed up the process. As you know it is too tedious to try to go from 1200 to .5 micron on ceramic...

There is a lot of good diamond lore and advice in this thread.

Might any of you know if there is a service to deposit a diamond edge on the many reamers I have to make for my flute making. For decades I have made them from drill rod, and, by choice, do not harden them, for reasons I will not go into here. The profiles are very wobbly, as they cut the acoustical bore of the flute, the 18th century flute bores were developed by trial and error, and I need to remain faithful to the old bore profiles. Normally, I lay over the edge to produce a bur that will bite and cut, but always thought it would be great to electro-deposit fine grit diamond on the edge to raise the cutting edge above the body profile, and also give me a longer cutting life. Clearly, with 8 inch dia diamond lapping discs now selling at about $9 each, in large batches the diamond depositing must be inexpensive, but does anyone know of a service that will do one-off such things?

Thanks

Rod
