PS. I understand that photography to show that level of detail is not easy!

Phil. Could you please post a picture to show the cutting that makes up the background foliage and clouds. It amazes me just how life-like you manage to get them. As always thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to photograph and post your work. I hope you and everyone on the forum have a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Two reasons, 1, to get it over and done with has to be done at some point, and 2, it's easy to carry on engraving, forgetting to leave a space for it....i've done that once or twice

Phil

i've had a couple knives sent back over the years to be signed. oops.

Phil, Thank you for allowing me/us to accompany you as you complete a magnificent piece of art on this side plate. The progress photos provide a path to follow, study and try to understand how the project comes together. I thank you for allowing me/us to come along.

Your art and skill as an engraver are your livelihood. I understand that and you have achieved the level of true master in both scrollwork and design and in the scenes you create. Your inlay work is probably the best in the world. In following the various threads over time you have shared other activities, like your music and trains. Do you ever just mount a piece of metal in the vise and engrave just for you, for the joy of creating? Please pardon my boldness in as a personal question of one who already shares so much. Fred

To answer your question Fred, no, I never mount a piece of metal and engrave it for myself. The job I have is not a real job, it's a payed hobby, I mean, i'm not digging a hole in a road :) but I have other hobbies and it's finding the time to work on all of them that's the problem. Also, after spending all day engraving, I don't really feel like spending another couple of hours doing it for myself.

Here's the back of a street of houses I have been working on over a period of months, they're 4mm to the foot. I was brought up in similar houses, including an outside toilet :)

Outstanding!, reminds me of years gone by here in Australia, Phil if you talk to Ray, I'm sure he can do a good deal on a lawn mower, :)

I was thinking that you probably didn't do a whole lot of engraving just for yourself. But that's because I was pretty sure that you're at a stage where most of your engraving work is what you want to do, on the canvases they provide you.

Kind of like us beginners (although we generally have to find our own objects to engrave). It's just that your work, being just a bit better winds up paying a bit better too. ;)

Steve,

The work I do today is of course a Collabrication between myself and either the gunmakers or the customer, but it usually ends up i'm glad to say with me doing something that I want to, the design is always mine anyway.
