Shading Practice

Thought that I should work on some less expensive pieces before jumping into the rifle. I shared the design here over a year ago. I know that it was not everyone’s favorite (not even mine), but thought it would be a good test.

Question - is this type of shading too fine for a rifle? Fewer and heavier shade lines better?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I guess I will go with the fine line shading on the rifle. Still tweaking my ‘bulino’. Tough to get just the right shading.

i see no reason to not use this on guns. it certainly works on the knife. quite nice to my eye.

Can I ask, what graver do you use for your fine detail lines?

Travis, I use the Lindsay templates. The knife shading was with a 116 degree parallel point. The tip was small but not as small as my bulino tips. I polish the flats to mirror but leave the top at 600 grit because it seems to allow me to see the point better as I place the lines close together.
