I need to bend a graver for special use . I think Glensteel gravers are HHS and do not know if they can be bent and hardened and re tempered. Or do I need to buy some carbon steel for this purpose? Help.
Why don’t you buy a bent line graver and re grind it to what you need. Just a thought MTC
Or get some 3/32 key stock to make your own , if you would like some send me a pm and I will send a 6 inch piece to you W2 if the memory serves
How much of a bend do you need? Can you just grind the underside of a graver away to provide enough clearance? Will tool steel work or do you require HSS?
Too temper I put them in a toaster oven, 350- 400 degrees for a hour and let cool in the oven. How ever you have to hide from the wife if she finds out
made bent gravers from old gravers, chainsaw files, saw files, carbide tipped circular blades (leaving the carbide at the tip) and some 1/8 " springs steel. all good
Jerry, those were mostly HSS gravers plus a square HSS and a stainless blank. All could be heated and bent and then re-heat treated. Plus shaping the points for proper use.
