So I was playing with this penny today...

And this is what I ended up with...A western penny?
It started as a 1938 Wheat leaf.
This is a first for me, I have a couple of question if you all don't mind.
What is proper etiquette for carving coins? Should you always leave the date?
How do you go about prepping the background removing metal and smoothing?
That was the hard part of doing the penny.

That looks great Darren. As far as I know there is no actual etiquette. Leaving the dates and certain aspects of the coin can be considered more choice by some. Because the work is done around it. I think a set of your pennies would make a great set of shirt studs for someone at the country music awards.

This was really micro engraving for me, since most of my western
engraving is on much larger items, this was a cool little challenge and
I am looking forward to doing more coins of different types and
in different styles of engraving. Thanks again.

You know I don't generally like western style engraving. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it just is not to my taste. However, when it is cut to a very small scale the way you did here I find it to be attractive.

Very nice indeed! Have you thought of doing something larger, like a State issue Quarter, a Half Dollar, or even a Silver Dollar. Something like that would make great conchos/buttons. We use domed quarters for the buttons on our custom spurs. Just a idea, kick it around, and keep up the great work. Hope to see more soon.
