I recently completed the engraving work on the 2014 Edition of the Colt Collectors Association Annual "Show Gun." Since 2014 is the 200th Anniversary of Sam Colt's birthday I dedicated the Theme of the project to that event. There are seven major gold inlays noting Colt's career as well as copius decorative gold and platinum border work.

This .45 Colt Single Action Army was sent to me directly from the Colt Custom Shop with a 10" barrel as well as a rare and distinctive extended grip frame. The one-piece grips, including the casted 14K gold Rampant Colt insert were made by Willy "B" Ellis and the final finish is Doug Turnbull's Charcoal Blue. The entire package includes a custom standing case by Les Yoder as well as a four-piece custom ivory accessory set made by Joe Lozito. The project is a Colt Custom Shop Exhibition Grade gun and it includes a "Factory Letter."

The composite poster shown in this Thread was designed by Paul Goodwin, photographer and Editor of the Rampant Colt Magazine and minor alterations it will also serve as the cover of the October, 2014 Edition. This Colt will be shown at the Colt Collectors Association Show in Concord, North Carolina during the weekend of October 3-5. It will auctioned on Saturday evening, October 4 at the Annual Auction.

Your imaginative Colts are always some of my favorites of you engravings. Nicely done. I'm sure it will be well received. By the way, did you take any tips from Francolini's first inlay of the dome. I remember him saying it was a bear or something to that effect.
Beautiful!

Yes, the Colt Onion Dome is always a challenge, but when it is inlaid on the loading gate or the the recoil shield you do have a curved surface to accent the shape. The Dome has a lot going on with all the onion shape, the columns and stars. I choose not to include the Rampant Colt on the gate inlay because it gets so incredibly small. Likewise, I did put a very tiny horse (or impression of a horse) atop the Dome on the barrel inlay (added above).

Thanks to all for the comments. I spent a considerable number of bench hours on this one knowing it was a Colt Custom Shop commissioned gun and that it would be published. Furthermore, it is important because it commemorates Sam Colt, a great American Industrialist.

There were five other artistes - Turnbull, Yoder, Lozito, Willie B, Keis, Goodwin- who put forth their best efforts as well, and none of us let the others down. We are very excited to show the gun at Concord, NC during the Annual Colt Show!

Mike.
Your work is always fantastic. Some guns I see are way over done but yours never are. This and other works of yours are a great inspiration to me and many others. I am sure this and other works of your will be historical. I hope to see you in Vegas. The gold portrait of Samuel Colt is great. That is tough to do in gold.
