The problem is spammers. It's a security question and I understand that people outside the USA (and even some inside the USA) will not likely know the answer. I don't make things difficult just to be mean, but I'm the one who has to mop the 10,000 porn spam posts when one sneaks through.

Every new member must be manually approved because of the havoc caused by spammers. I have been in China for several days and have not had much time to do Admin chores. Sometimes it's quick and sometimes it can take a few days if I'm traveling, teaching, or busy. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I couldn't confirm my email either. I switched my address from GMAIL and the issue was resolved using my Apple iCloud account. Gmail rejecting emails appears to be a problem for a lot of users.

We get new gmail members every day, and I can't explain why some have problems with the email activation.
