I´ll defiantly look into and get the DVD by Sam Alfano - The Essential Guide to Drawing Scrolls It looks very interesting!

While waiting to order my engraving tools I´ll spend some time to learn the scroll drawings.. a quick sketch I did last night.. a lot to learn, but feel free to give some feedback :)

I agree - nice shading!

Of course, you can't do that kind of shading in engraving - it's more like pen and ink where you either have a line or don't. Trace a copy of your main lines and see if you can match the shading using just lines.

I think this design would have possibilities in some areas, like fabric design. It has a whimsical feel and sense of movement. As for hand engraving, I can't see a practical use for it as-is. With a bit of refinement the scrollwork portion could be usable, but the large leafy segments just aren't going to cut it in most hand engraving applications. You have obviously spent time on this drawing and that's GREAT. :thumbs up: I wish more people would do this.

There are thousands of photos in our Gallery, and my advice would be to browse those photos and study the work of others. When you see an element you like, draw it in your sketch pad. Take note of what you like about certain designs and what you DON'T like.

Keep drawing and keep posting!

Thanks a lot for feedback! I defiantly need that DVD :) What´s said it´s pretty obvious when I think of it, and I´ll probably have larger understanding as soon as I know how to use the tools.. Thanks again and I´ll keep on drawing while waiting :)

The good news is, I can see by the talent that you do have, a very short time with Sam's video and you will be amazed at your progress. you are on the right track learning to draw before you cut. I went through the same thing over the past several months and while I'm still by no means good, it helped to have an understanding of scroll structure and design before I started cutting. I also took a couple on line classes from Chris DeCamillis. www.engraversstudio.com

Thanks a lot for comment, appreciate it! I´ll defiantly get the video! I feel (at least hope) I learn a little from each sketch, and it actually helps to look at it at a photo.. then it´s easier to see the flaws and errors.. :)
