Dubbing the point has been mentioned a couple of times, but I'm not really sure what is meant by that. Also, when ya'll talk about a longer or shorter "belly" on the graver, is this referring to the length of the heel?

Thanks

thughes, Dubbing is lightly dragging your graver heel down over 600 grit wet & dry automotive paper, that the way I do it,belly and heel are one in same. J.J.

Thanks JJ, that's what I thought on the belly. But doesn't that dubbing thing dull your point?

Your point doesn't need to be needle sharp to engrave. Especially in harder metals, a slightly rounded point is much more durable and cuts just as well as a needle sharp point.

Be careful with dubbing the point. It can work well for main cuts with an air tool (not so good for pushing by hand). But when you are fine line shading, your graver tips need to be razor sharp to get the best results.

Cheers
