I just let it slowly cool in the oven... overnight... its cool when I get up in the morning.

I did ruin my mothers 4x4 corning ware container I put it in. A small amount of smoke dis coloration formed on it and won't come off all the way.

So would olive oil work???

Canola, sunflower and peanut oils are all very high. Olive oil is good but do not use virgin olive oil. I just finished engraving my stainless steel bolt handle and found that the deeper I engrave the harder the metal becomes. So this process only anneals the outter surface just enough to engrave.
