Wilton English's lettering practice plate

Wilton was an apprentice to engraver E.C. Prudhomme. This is one of his practice plates where he was honing his skill at script lettering. The amount of work in this scrap piece of brass shows his dedication and perseverance. This is a guy who really wanted engraving and was willing to do what it took to get there. I think it's pretty fantastic.

Your plates remind me of Charlie Russell and Didyoung.
Wherever Russell went he carried sculpting clay, Didyoung his sketchpad.
If Russell saw an interesting subject, he would place his hands behind his back and form the clay into an artist's "rough".
This being akin to using photographs taken afield for studio reference.
His constant practice ( like Didyoung in the airport) made his studio work, a piece of cake.
As Shawn says "Perfect practice ...".
