Leland, I use the small polishing pins (2mm) as sold by Rio Grande, hand held like a pencil. I use the very fine green one. The case hardening locks in the fine detail and light polishing will remove the color easily without disturbing the metal. I selectively remove the color, leaving it where it does not conflict with the engraving.

Some use chemicals but I have not tried that. The polishing works for me allowing me to take off that which I wish without disturbing the rest.

I've been working on a Spyderco Police knife and several small .22 and .25 semi-autos plus a couple graveside stainless flower stakes and my wife's gold bracelet. Too many projects to catch up on as I've been incapacitated due to some health issues (knee replacements, UTI, sepsis and e-coli to name a few) which has placed most of my work on hold as my studio is upstairs and the climb has been tough to get up there. But, it's coming back slowly. Been doing a lot of drawing and studying.

Not so much engraving here. Doing some practise. Want to learn inlaying. Straight lines with silverwire first. 0,5 mm wire. Unfortunately I see that I have to practice more....and of course Big-un, Get well soon !!

Big-un get well soon and remember the dixon#2 pencil is your friend and so is the eraser on the other end
Thanks to all you guys for your concerns. I try not to mention things like this as there are others in far worse shape than I. It's just frustrating to want to create something and not be able to due to the old body wearing out. I have a Dr's appointment tomorrow morning to address the issue of my patella in the last knee replacement; it won't stay in place and hurts like the dickins when I try and get up from sitting. Anyway, I'm a glass half full guy and with the Good Lord's help, this too shall pass. I'll post something when I get a chance.

Well still maintaining social distance as much as possible here. Still engraving the Winchester but a bit burnt out on it and need to change things up so I can look at what I am engraving with a fresh perspective.
So as a change-up I am getting set to engrave a custom stainless steel golf putter. Never did one of these so it should be fun. Also playing around with Procreate to do the sketches and I must admit it is a very interesting program for the money Not being an expert on it I have come up with this rough sketch for the design
