Hi everyone, my first post here on the forum. Done all my work (mostly jewelry) with a visor and am thinking about getting a scope, I've always wanted to do hand engraving and was looking at the Meiji EMZ-5. It's the only one I have had a chance to look through, how do these compare? Thanks and love this forum!

Gary,
No comparison at all. I own and use an old Meji, and I used Sams scope for a week, the difference is unbelievable. When my skill warrants I will upgrade to the Ziess or the Leica.

Thanks for the reply Todd, my son just got the Meiji scope and when I sat down and looked through it I was blown away at the clarity and visibility. The only thing that bothered me was just the slightest movement of my head and things were blacked out. I was wondering if this was common with all scopes and also do they all have about the same focal distance?

depending on the particular scope in question, that can be a problem. more with some systems, less with other scopes.check out "exit pupil" on google. likely a full explanation of the phenomenon there

I'll do that, I know I have experienced it with cheaper rifle scopes. I've spent a lot of time with a GIA gemscope plotting diamonds but everything was always clear under 10X, I'm sure it will take a little getting used to having the work and my hands a lot farther away than what I've always had with the visor. Thanks for the guidance!

Gary,
I bought my Miji and it is serviceable and has taken me to the heights I've sieved so far :). But seriously, if I so much as change just the angle of my vise a little bit, focus is all to hell. Depth of field I believe it's called. But the Leica and the Ziess are amazingly more forgiving. I spend a lot of time re-focusing.

Unless I'm getting senile, I thought I read a day or two ago, that this scope would be up on eBay for another 26+ days. . .just checked, and it's sold. I'd planned to bid on it at the last minute, a common thing people do. I wondered if it was an eBay typo, or they pulled a fast one, for some reason? My high end rifle sale experienced a delay, and when I'm in a position to purchase, I hope there isn't another sneaky Pete pulled. Has anyone else on the Cafe forum noticed this sort of thing with eBay.

If you look at the Original auction, in the description and disclaimer, you will that he has a phone number and verbiage that allows for a person to call and make offers...or a person can just send you a private message and say "hey I want this and since no one has bid can you amend the ending time and I'll bid 1200.00" Lots of ways around the eBay stuff. I think I'm around 1950 feedbacks but over 3000 transactions on eBay and used to get contacted all the time to end auctions or cancel them out right. They try to tell you why pay ebay those big fees? I'll just paypal you...blah blah blah...Little do they know I still watch John Wayne movies and Lone Ranger episodes on DVD!!!! :)
