Agreed, but there is something so satisfying about taking something "ugly and plain" and making it sparkle. Yes the fender washers do not require near as much prep workthe fender washers roger mentioned ,generally have a smoother , thinner finish. you'll likely find them more pleasant to practice with.
Try the stainless fender washers for a good challenge.

Fender washers are good practice plates because they are large with a small hole. My first practice plates were electrical junction box covers.
