    Progress on copper laps

Initially I was using diamond paste only for polishing. But after some encouraging reading here and at the faceter‘s guild I bought coarser diamond preparations and shape HSS gravers with 40 micrometer grit. Copper laps for shaping and prepolishing grits, hard brass for final polishing with 0.5...

    Question: turntable

As I said a month ago, I‘ll replace my high-friction turntable. Did it saturday. It‘s a small potters wheelwith two 6062 ball bearings. It’s got a M10 thread which comes in handy to fix it onto my height-change rail. Cutting curves works much better now.

3d printing a little workbench organization

I‘m completely in favor of 3D printing. We used to have a 3D scan and print shop in the Karlsruhe city center, but they relocated and I would have to send files and recieve the printed parts much later by mail. I use CAD software a lot and did designs for complex 3D printed parts already...

3d printing a little workbench organization

When you liked the flat wooden graver stand, you might like this as well: It was a foot of some old furniture, could now rotate around it‘s magnetic foot and stores most of my flexible shaft tools. Saw something similiar in a Karlsruhe goldsmith shop, recognised it‘s potential and made one for...

3d printing a little workbench organization

Dear John, I believe it is dental laboratory equipment. I bought it about 20 years ago here: https://www.goldschmiedebedarf.de/product_info.php?products_id=11944 Still available, mine had a transparent plastic lid as well, normal length dental burrs do not fit under it, just the „RA“ stile...

    Question: Tricks for flare cutting?

Dear Roger, thanks a lot for your advice and the link to your tutorial. I‘ll go through it toroughly. I got Sam‘s instruction video quite early and work my way trough it since weeks. I‘m always amazed how much detailed information is provided by you „great names“ in engraving to newbies like...

    Question: Tricks for flare cutting?

Would it be OK to wet the graver with some oil for flare cutting? My high speed steel gravers cut considerably faster with oil. Using a turntable, do you normally grab the vise or the turntable when turning it? Best regards, Ralf

    Question: turntable

Hi, I made myself a turntable two years ago, starting with a 9“ thrust bearing used for rotating parts of furniture and heavy TV sets. It works, but... Made from Aluminum with steel ball bearings, the precision of the bearing is not comparable with thrust bearings for machines or vehicules...

    Brother where art thou?

I‘m using a Brother B/W Laser / Scanner since 2006 and could confirm that direct transfer from paper to metal with acetone sometimes works, most of the time doesn‘t. I‘ve tried other solvents to no avail. For practice plates and low detail pictures I print on „Backpapier“, a brown stiff paper...

    Diamond paste/powder

I tried hand lapping on copper, soft iron and brass. Always used 0.5 micron diamond paste. Brass works best for me, actually a piece of lead free „Ecobrass“. I spread a little of the paste on the plate and rub it in with a piece of hardened steel. A copper disc I made for the flexible shaft...

Announcement: New instructional video on The Art of Flare Cutting

Just tried Sinterklas‘ suggestion. Works well for straight lines. Used on curves, it uncoverered the additional problem that cutting left bends seems more natural to me than right bends. Starting the left bend‘s backhand cut in the „Wrong“ direction makes it look as bad as a right bend...
